In the 1600s, a dark red ore had been found by copper miners in Saxony, Germany. They believed the dark red substance was an ore of copper, but they had been unable to extract any copper from it. They had named it ‘kupfernickel’ which could be translated as ‘goblin’s copper’ because the miners thought that there were goblins or little imps at work, preventing them extracting the copper.
Later, between 1751 and 1754, the Swedish chemist Axel Cronstedt carried out a number of experiments to determine the true nature of kupfernickel. After finding that its chemical reactions were not what he would have expected from a copper compound,he determined that it could not be copper. Its properties led him to conclude that he had isolated a new metallic element. Cronstedt named the new element nickel, after the kupfernickel from which he had isolated it

You mix with some very important elements to make aloys. What elements do you mix with and what products are you used in to make these alloys?

I am mainly used in making stainless steel. Copper and I are used in making desalination plants for converting sea water into fresh water. Steel and I are used for armour plate. I have been used in coins. My plate protects softer metals. When finely-divided, I'm used as a catalyst for hydrogenating vegetable oils, and I also give a green color to glass.

You share a unique property with 2 other metals? What is the property and what are the 2 other elements?

Let's get together and make a compound!
